Millinery Student Wins Feltmakers’ Design Competiton – The Commercial Appeal Award

Lynne Hawkes, a former student at Morley College from our City & Guilds Millinery Design Level 2 2020 and Millinery for Beginners 2018, has just won The Commercial Appeal Award 2021 from the Worshipful Company of Felftmakers of London.

The concept ‘Metamorphosis’ was based on transformation. I combined images from the Chihuly (glass artist) exhibition in the Waterlily House at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. My piece incorporated elements of the Chihuly glass leaves with the natural waterlily leaves and flowers. The front of the headpiece reflects the calmness of leaves on water, and as the wearer turns, the leaves give way to the stunning waterlily flower which is only seen as the wearer walks away. I love the element of surprise!

The headpiece includes classic millinery stitches, techniques such as wirework, and a range of materials – felt, silk, buckram, and tarlatan. It also includes dyes, acrylic paint, silver elastic, and glitter glue! I used freehand machine embroidery to embellish the work.
