My name is Christine Mhando and I’m the Fashion Subject Lead at Chelsea Centre.
I teach on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion, Textiles & Communications and the BTEC HNC in Tailoring and Streetwear courses.
My background is in fashion design and prior to teaching I worked in several areas of the industry for over 15 years, including designing in-house for clothing manufacturers that supplied high street retailers and running my own independent label Chichia, selling collections to retailers such as Asos, Urban Outfitters and independent boutiques around the world (Europe, Japan, Australia, Africa…).
Most recently I worked at West Herts. College, Watford as a Fashion Lecturer.
I am a huge fan of design and my specialism area of fashion is particularly interesting to me as a mode of self-expression.
I’m very new to the Centre (three weeks in as we speak) but I can say that I’m very impressed by the level of work our fashion students are producing on the whole and the amazing support they are given by our teaching staff as they prepare to progress onto their desired career path or University. I can’t take credit for any of it but I’m still proud to be joining such a supportive, high achieving college.
I love teaching. I got into it after doing my Masters in 2017. And after being in industry for so long, it feels very meaningful to be able to share the tips and tricks I picked up in the profession with my students.
I am so gratified that I had the journey in Industry that I did; creating your own brand and small boutique business is such a rollercoaster and I learned so much.
I also like to think that I can teach my students how to avoid all the mistakes I made!
